Just got Samsung Galaxy s2 Skyrocket (AT&T phone) with Straight talk - require to root?

Hi - forgive me if this has already been covered, but just trying to find info about this. I have a Samsung Galaxy Skyrocket (AT&T Phone) that I have activated with a Straight Talk AT&T SIM card. I ported my number, and changed the APN settings (putting the ST APN as default as I am not able to delete the original APN).

Everything's working great but the internet seems a bit slow, and I'm wondering if that's because I couldn't delete the old APN.

Do I have to root my phone in order to do this? Also, I was going to update my software to the newest Android (ICS?) - will that take care of the problem so I don't have to root the phone? Or do you have to root your phone before you can update to the latest software?

I'm a little confused, any help is appreciated!

I am in Minot, ND. Thanks!!!

No need to root, if your speed is slow, it all depends on traffic the tower has. If you upgrade to ICS, some of your apps that is built in will become NOT COMPATIBLE WITH YOUR DEVICE and no way to delete it. You could always revert back to Gingerbread if you so desire. You don't need to delete the old APN. Your carrier locks it down unless you have the international version of your phone. Just create a new one. Use these settings below:

    FIELD SETTINGS
    NAME: straight talk
    APN: att.mvno
    PROXY: proxy.mvno.tracfone.com
    PORT: 80
    MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
    MMS PROXY: 66.209.11.33
    MMS PORT: 80

SAVE your APN, reboot your phone.

Now this is only for AT&T NOT T-mobile. If your internet still doesn't work. I removed the 1st proxy setting and was getting Internet connection.
