"Phone Unlock Code" screen missing with Straight Talk Sim Card

    Hi,

I just bought a locked Motorola Atrix HD on eBay. It is an AT&T branded phone. I purchased a micro sim card from ST hoping to be able to get it to work. Currently have service on ST with old phone.

I inserted the new ST sim and powered up the phone, expecting to get to an "unlock code" screen. Knew phone was locked and was planning on buying an unlocked code but tried it anyway to see what would happen when I powered up the phone. To my surprise, I powered up the phone all the way to the home screen with no problem. I was able to make calls and receive text once I got the sim card activated. I cannot get he internet and mms to work despite entering the included ST settings I received with my purchase. I tried several times and have been on the phone with ST for days to no avail.

    Questions:

    1. How come I can access phone/text on a locked phone with an AT&T compatible sim card from Straight Talk? I thought the phone has to be unlocked for that to happen.

    2. If I purchase an unlock code, how do I get to the "unlock code" screen in order to type in the code?

    3. Is this not working becuase the sim card I have is an AT&T compatible sim on Straight Talk and the phone doesn't see it as "foreign carrier" card? If so, why is it that phone/text is working and not internet/mms? I am able to type in and save APN settings so why isn't it working? Or will APN settings not work because the phone is still locked.

    4. Do I have to order a T-mobile micro sim straight from T-Mobile for me to get the "unlock code" screen? Is that the solution?

    5. I have read on different posts that your phone does NOT have to be unlocked in order for you to put in a ST sim card and use talk/text feature. Is that true? If so, do I need to unlock the phone first so that the mms/internet will work?

The APN settings I used are those included on the green card that comes when you purchase an AT&T compatible sim card from ST.

I appreciate any help I can get with this matter. Thanks.

My guess is your Straight Talk phone that you were using with your sim card was running off AT&T's network. This is why the sim card is able to work. I currently use an AT&T branded Samsung Galaxy S3 phone with Straight Talk, with a Straight Talk AT&T sim card and everything works just fine for me. This is because Straight Talk is using AT&T's towers. Just pretend like you're still with AT&T for service, but your bill is just cut in half :-)

I think you're on the right track in assuming that your data / mms not working has to do with your APN settings.

If you were to buy an unlock code for your phone, which I'm showing is around $15 - $16 on eBay, the seller will include instructions. Typically you punch in a few symbols and then numbers on your keypad to bring up a screen where you then enter the code. You'll then have an unlocked phone. However, to me it sounds like you're just having APN issues. I think you're looking into this issue way too much Take breath and continue reading on. I'm providing you the APN settings below.

Do you know how to create a new APN on your phone and save it? Try these APN settings for your phone. I bet you'll be successful in getting data. Let me know if MMS still doesn't work. If it doesn't, there's just 1 tweak we need to make.

You do NOT need to order a T-Mobile sim card to get the unlock screen. Some phones do require you put in a sim card other than an AT&T to unlock, but this can be any sim card. If this is the case, then just find a friend who uses T-Mobile and pop in their sim card so you can get the screen. However, I don't think you have to worry about unlocking your phone right now since you're using an AT&T Straight Talk sim card with an AT&T phone. Your problem right now is just your APN settings.

The APN settings that Straight Talk gives you is absolute complete crap. They're incomplete and miss vital details. Use the APN settings above.

    Hi Richard,

Thanks for that info. I followed every step in your instructrions to no avail. I saved and rebooted and when I try to open my browser it says "No network connection . . . the browser cannot load this page because there is no internet connection." On my opera browser it says "could not locate remote server". I have tried all kinds of different APN settings as I have read through hours of forum listings but nothing is helping.

Under my APNs I have the default AT&T PTA settings with a gray shaded lock (cannot delete it) but I do have the option to create other APNs and choose that by selecting the radio button. I currently have

    AT&T PTA (unchecked)
Straight Talk (checked according to your config)
    MMS (according to your config)

    Still nothing is working.

I have tried taking in the sim card a thousand times. If I take it out I can go into APN settings and actually highlight and delete the AT&T settings but as soon as I pop in the ST sim again, they appear back again (by default I assume).

I have been on the phone with ST for 3 days now and nothing but rude and arrogant foreigners who are reading off of scripts. I gave up on them.

I ordered a sim from T-mobile. (nobody I know uses T-mobie . . .couldn't borrow from them) Was able to get one online for $0.99 with no activation fee or shipping fee. Can't hurt to have one to test and see if I can unlock it. Will have to wait a few days for it to come and found an unlock code for $9.99.

At this point I am willing to try ANYTING.

The only thing I haven't tried is to do a factory reset. I don't mind doing one since I only have 2-3 apps installed and no contacts input yet as the phone is brand new and I never got it up and running.

    Any input is appreciated.

    Thanks.

Humm... that is strange. I would suggest doing a factory reset then :-/ not sure how much that is going to help. But anything is worth a shot.

Also, the AT&T PTA you mention that is grayed out in your APN settings, that is normal. No worries about having to delete it, etc. Mine is always there and does not allow me to remove it. As long as I have Straight Talk's radio checked I'm fine.

I'm sorry you're having so many issues with this. My Galaxy S III works wonderful with Straight Talk using the AT&T sim card!

I was looking to see if it was possible to install a custom ROM on your phone, but it doesn't look like there are any out :-( I thought this might have helped.

Do you know anyone with AT&T service? Maybe you could insert their sim card to see if everything is working as should for them?

I am doing a reset right now . .. will see if that changes anything. I am clueless at this point. Have nobody that uses AT&T or T-mobile around me right now....only Verizon users . . . . Let's see what happens after factory reset.

Possibly try another phone :-( It sounds like maybe this would could be faulty? I would maybe suggest what Richard said "Do you know anyone with AT&T service? Maybe you could insert their sim card to see if everything is working as should for them?" At this point you'll have to start trouble-shooting with other options I think.

    Hi CB27,

Thanks for your reply. I contacted Straight talk and after hours on the phone with ST, they checked and reset the sim card, everything is OK on their end, I was still left in the cold with a non working network. I contacted Motorola and they are baffled to why it is not working.

My phone is still Locked, but since I am using ST AT&T towers, ST rep told me that it doesn't matter if the phone was locked or not, that I should be able to connect. After speaking to Motorola's tech dept, I am starting do doubt what the ST rep said. I did trouble shooting with Motorola for over 1.5 hrs and there is nothing wrong with the phone. It looks like the phone is not even attempting to connect to the internet though it immediately says "no internet connection". No bar or circle indicating it is at least trying to connect. This can be due to the fact that the phone is not allowing additional APN's to run on a locked phone, despite what ST says.

My last attempt now is to try to unlocke this phone with an unlock code purchased over the internet using a T-mobile (foregin carrier) sim to get to the unlock code screen and see if the APN settings from Straight Talk will allow me to connect to the internet once the phone is unlocked.

I have tried to modify/edit and delete the existing AT&T locked APN settings so that they don't interfere with existing ST APN settings by downloading an app called "APN backup and restore" which I have had no problem with in the past, but to my luck, this app doesn't work on ICS 4.0.4. ICS doesn't allow third party apps to make changes to APN's. Great! So in short of unlocking the phone, there is no other way for me to try and see if ST APN's will let me access the internet and data.

So this question goes out to anybody out there that has an UNLOCKED Motorola Atrix HD running ICS on a Straight Talk prepaid account. Does your Internet/MMS work using ST on your UNLOKCED Atrix HD??? If if it does, please reply back and let me know if you had to do any other modifications or you simply got the phone, popped in the sim card, typed in your APN settings and was ready to go.

I appreciate all replies at this point.

    Thanks to everyone!

Wait? So Straight Talk "reset" your sim card? I would ask for a new sim card ASAP! Start fresh and brand new. When you start messing with the sim card (oh lord) who knows what's going to start happening. Their support is a nightmare and who knows what they've done!

However, I do 100% absolutely agree that if you're using an AT&T branded phone with their AT&T Straight Talk sim card, that isn't a problem. Like I mentioned in my first post, it's just like you're an AT&T customer, same service, etc. except you aren't paying double the bill.

Just spent hours on the phone with them again and nothing but ignorance. Today I contacted Motorola who checked all settings with me and according to them, nothing wrong with the phone, it was manufactured in August. They said it is ST. So I called ST back . . . I asked for a new sim right away only to be given the run around for over 1.5 hrs with a manager . . . have the manager's direct hotline number by now so I get right to them. I thought "no problem" . . . boy was I wrong . . . the manager avoided all my requests for a new sim. Kept putting me on hold checking settings on her end, "refreshing/resetting" or what the heck she was doing to the sim, which has been done a million times by now. I was told the same thing over and over, "there is nothing wrong with the sim" if you can make calls then the sim is working fine. It is becaues the phone is not one of ours that we sell!" I almost died when I hear that!. Are you kidding me??? Oh, but wait . . it gets better . . .when I asked her "why are you avoiding my request for a new sim, is your script telling you to never give out a replacement sim . . . I got silence and then she said, "we are not supposed to give out new sim cards but you can purchase one". At that point I said, "just transfer my service back to my old sim card so that I can at least use my old phone for now". (my old phone required a regular size sim and the Atrix HD a micro sim). She started the process only to come back and say . . . "I will send you a new sim card for your old phone!". When I asked why, she said I can't transfer back to an old card so I will send you a replacement to your old sim card . . .. I said . . ."then heck . . .send me a replacement for the micro sim instead . . .that's what I wanted the entire time" . . . she said .. ."no, I can't do that, I can only send you one for your old sim becuase my system won't let me transfer your service back to the old card" . . .JESUS!!! THESE ARE THE MORONS I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH.

I am exhausted and ready to throw the phone out the window and take my losses. I have sat infront of this computer for 5 days now and lived on the phone with all kinds of reps who are pointing fingers at eachother with me being stuck in the middle with no solution.

I have tried just about every APN combination I have come across on the internet . . .nothing is working. I decided to order a new SIM . . .on my own with no help from ST and see if that works. . . if not . . .I am done . . .don't know what else to do.
