AT&T Straight talk APN Settings getting only Edge Speeds

    Hi all,

I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 from Verizon.
It is updated to the latest Software from Verizon.

    Settings --> About Phone

    Model Number : SCH-I535
    Android Version : 4.1.2
    Baseband Version : I535VRBMB1
    Kernel Version : 3.0.31 -861013 se.infra@SEP-129 #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Feb 14 15:16:58 KST 2013
    Build Number : JZO54K.I535VRBMB1
    Hardware Version : I535.10

It is rooted. It has superuser installed.
I checked whether the phone is rooted or not with RootChecker and the App showed me that the phone is rooted.

I bought the Titanium Backup Pro and APN Manager PRO from Android Market.
I made APN Manager PRO a System App by going into the Titanium Backup Pro.

Initially I was unable to enter the APN in Home-->Settings-->More Settings ---> Mobile Networks ---> Access Point Names.

But after making the APN Manager Pro a System App using the Titanium Backup Pro, I was able to enter the APN Settings.

    The settings I entered are

    Name : Straight Talk
    APN : att.mvno
    Proxy : Left Blank
    Port : Left Blank
    User name : Left Blank
    Password : Left Blank
    Server : Left Blank
    MMSC : http://mmsc.cingular.com
    MMS proxy : 66.209.11.33
    MMS port : 80
    MCC : 310
    MNC : 410
    Authentication type : Left Blank
    APN type : default,supl,mms
    APN protocol : IPv4
Enable/disable APN : Check Box selected with Green Tick Mark.
    Bearer : unspecified

Can Any one tell me, what did I do wrong?

    Any help is highly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Chris.

My guess is your unlocked Verizon phone is only capable of edge speed with the Sim you are using.

This thread says only edge speeds available right now, by turning the Verizon S3 into a "world" phone.

But go read the entire thread, someone may have found a solution. They were messing with T-Mobile sim, but same participle.

    Mr. efparri. YOUR ARE WRONG.
    Just kidding.

Wish the below SO CALLED Straight Talk Representatives ARE AT LEAST 1% KNOWLEDGEABLE AS YOU ARE.

This is the reply which I got from THE SO CALLED STRAIGHT TALK REPRESENTATIVES.

    Hi Qzmpal,

We are sorry to inform you that Straight Talk's BYOP (Bring Your Own Phone) program will only work with an unlocked domestic GSM phone. The reason why you are getting EDGE speeds because we don’t support it. It cannot be used on the BYOP (Bring Your Own Phone) program because these phones are under the CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) technology which does not use a SIM card.

Feel free to send us an email at ST.CorpResolutionTeam@straighttalk.com.

Re: AT&T Straight talk APN Settings getting only Edge Speeds

Hey there, I saw you posted this on XDA and answered it there but not sure if you saw my response. You are correct in the fact that the Verizon Galaxy S3 supports HSPA however the Verizon model has an HSPA block which prevents it from working on either of the US GSM Carriers which are who Straight Talk use (T-Mobile and AT&T). Due to the terms of their LTE spectrum all Verizon LTE phones must be SIM unlocked however to prevent people from buying their phone and using it on other carriers Verizon will often place a block against 3G service for US GSM carriers which allows them to meet the requirement but still make the phone useless on other US Carriers. I can confirm that HSPA service does work on international carriers as I have myself used it in Europe but sadly you are out of luck in getting anything faster then EDGE in the US, I can even personally confirm this as having tried both AT&T and T-Mobile SIM cards in my phone neither of which will pull faster then EDGE.

WRONG. It does. Read further. Please stop giving out misinformation.

The January 2013 update for this Verizon phone made is world capable. Here's a screenshot.

and here's info from Verizon and Samsung, all stating HSPA+ support. The only disagreement is which bands. To say HSPA+ is not supported at all is totally false information.

OK so I'll summarize the information about which UMTS/HSPA+ bands are supported from all the different sources.

    1) Verizon Global Department told @mehuljk only 2100 MHz
    2) xda-developers wiki page says 850, 1900, 2100 MHz
    3) Samsung chat told me 850, 900, 1900 and 2100 MHz (I have the transcript of the chat in my email)
    4) Samsung told @mehuljk 850, 1800 and 2100 MHz

So which one is correct? It's obviously a combination of the hardware and software/firmware that determines which mobile network technologies (i.e. CDMA, GSM, UMTS, etc) and bands are supported.

AT&T operates the UMTS/HSPA+ network on 850 and 1900 MHz so either you were in an area where AT&T uses 1900 MHz for 3G and this phone doesn't support UMTS/HSPA+ on 1900 MHz or you were in an area where AT&T uses 850 MHz for 3G and this phone doesn't support UMTS/HSPA+ on 850 MHz or this phone doesn't support either one (850 or 1900 MHz).

You aren't using a sim card? See the Straight Talk reps are clueless. Especially Sara. Of course you are using a sim card, even if it is a Verizon S3. Tell her to go do some research about Verizon's global phones.

But Verizon's iPhone 5 has no such block. It has CDMA + LTE + unlocked GSM. It CAN be used with AT&T and its MVNOs and get HSPA+ speeds.
